FREEDOM TO LIVE YOUR FULL POTENTIAL

Codependency Counselling Melbourne.

Codependency sometimes referred to as “relationship addiction," describes sacrificing one’s personal needs to try to meet the needs of others.

Although it is often associated with romantic relationships, codependency can be experienced in all types of close relationships, including with family and friendships. Someone who is codependent has an extreme focus outside themselves.

Their thoughts and actions revolve around other people, such as a spouse or relative or they build their identity on helping or “saving” other people. Codependents typically experience feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety and insecurity in these relationships and may also experience perfectionism and control issues. Codependent symptoms can worsen if left untreated.

Breaking the Cycle

People often think it is healthy to say, “I don’t want to be dependent on anyone or anything. Actually, human beings must depend on all sorts of people, processes and institutions in order to live life.

What's not constructive for us is when we drift toward the extremes of excessive dependency, romantic obsessions or isolation. In relationships and in life, we should strive for healthy dependency, which is mutually satisfying and balanced interdependence.

Getting to the Root Causes

It is possible to overcome codependency. Drawing on interventions from cognitive behavioural therapies and mindfulness, you will learn to practice self-care consistently and set realistic expectations for yourself in relationships and in your life overall. With a solid set of self-care practices, you can begin setting healthy boundaries and learning to be more independent.

A central task in the treatment of codependency is dealing with past trauma. For most people, this means examining childhood and family dynamics objectively so that you can become comfortable with yourself. Self-compassion and kindness are key during all parts of treatment for codependency.
